Menopause typically starts when the follicles in a woman’s ovaries are exhausted and the ovaries stop functioning or releasing eggs.  Due to this, the levels of oestrogen and progesterone which are removed from the ovaries decline.

The beginning of menopause for a woman depends on certain factors like the age of Menopause in her mother as well as other lifestyle factors like smoking, diet, exercise, etc.

While it may be possible to expect Menopause around the time one’s mother/ sisters had theirs, it is impossible to predict the exact time it will begin for one.

However, there are some signs and symptoms that may indicate that Menopause is approaching, including:

Irregular periods: As a person approaches menopause, their periods may become irregular, shorter, or longer, and the flow may be lighter or heavier.

Hot flashes: Hot flashes are sudden feelings of warmth or heat that may cause sweating, flushing, and rapid heartbeat. They are common symptoms of menopause.

Vaginal dryness: As oestrogen levels decrease, the tissues of the vaginal wall can become thin, dry, and less elastic, leading to discomfort during sex and an increased risk of vaginal infections.

Mood changes: Fluctuating hormone levels can cause mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and depression.

Insomnia: Sleep disturbances are common during menopause and may be related to hot flashes, night sweats, and hormonal changes.

Changes in libido: Some people may experience decreased sex drive or difficulty becoming aroused during menopause.

While these symptoms may indicate that menopause is approaching, it is essential to remember that every woman’s experience is different. If you are experiencing symptoms interfering with your daily life or have concerns about Menopause, it's essential to speak with a healthcare professional. They can help evaluate your symptoms and provide guidance on managing any symptoms you may be experiencing.
