Fibroids are connective tissue and muscle tumours that grow in the uterus and may give rise to symptoms like heavy bleeding, pain, intermenstrual bleeding, infertility etc.

The management of fibroids depends upon their size, their exact location and the symptoms that they are causing. While some symptoms of fibroids may be managed by medications, and some fibroids may be treated by interventions other than surgery, the mainstay of treatment is usually surgery which either removes only the fibroids or the uterus along with the fibroids.

Medications: Medications can help manage the symptoms of fibroids such as heavy bleeding, cramping and pelvic pain. These include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and hormonal birth control or tranexemic acid.

Uterine artery embolization (UAE): This is a minimally invasive procedure that involves injecting small particles into the uterine arteries to cut off the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink and die.

MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS): This noninvasive procedure uses ultrasound waves to heat and destroy the fibroids.

It is important to note that not all fibroids can be treated without surgery, and the most effective treatment option will depend on each individual case. It is best to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
