A female at puberty has about 4 lakh follicles in her ovaries. As she starts to have periods and continues to do so till the age of menopause, the supply of follicles in the ovaries slowly gets exhausted. Menopause occurs when the number of follicles in a woman’s ovaries goes below 1000 and the ovaries are unable to function any further. Hence the production of estrogen and progesterone secreted from the ovaries also declines. The average age of Menopause worldwide is 48 to 51 years.

HRT is a treatment with hormones or a combination of hormones that can help manage menopause symptoms, but it is not a way to delay menopause. The age at which a woman enters menopause is largely determined by genetics and cannot be controlled or delayed by medication.
