Does Getting a Hysterectomy Induce Menopause?

If a woman undergoes a hysterectomy, which is the surgical removal of the uterus, they will no longer have menstrual periods. A hysterectomy will induce Menopause only if the ovaries are also removed during the procedure. If the ovaries are intact, they may continue to produce oestrogen and progesterone, and may not experience Menopause as a result of the procedure.

However, if the ovaries are removed, which is called an oophorectomy, the woman will experience surgical menopause. This is because the ovaries are responsible for producing the majority of the body's oestrogen and progesterone, and the sudden loss of these hormones can lead to menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and mood changes.

It is important to note that even if the ovaries are not removed during a hysterectomy, the procedure can still have an impact on your hormone levels and menstrual cycles, and you may experience menopausal symptoms as a result. It's important to discuss the potential effects of a hysterectomy on your hormone levels with your doctor prior to the procedure and be aware of the changes.
